Things to Consider While Going for A Microsoft Business Central Upgrade

It has been more than 2 years since Microsoft released the Dynamics 365 Business Central. Touted while being released as the Best ERP for small and mid-segment businesses, to some it has lived up to that reputation whereas to some there is still a lot of scope for improvement. So as a business owner if you have finally taken a decision that you will be going in for a Microsoft Business Central Upgrade, then you would want to consider the following things before getting one done:

Identify First Which Version Of NAV You Are Using

You can do an upgrade to Business Central Online if you happen to work on a supported version of Dynamics NAV on-premises, provided your application customization is handled by extensions. In case there is any data from tables with code customizations, it cannot be carried forward from Dynamics NAV.

Before migrating to Business Central Online, you can also upgrade it to Business Central Spring 2019 (version 14), though the process is divided into the following parts:

• All non-standard functionalities and customizations must first be converted to apps and per-tenant extensions.

• The cloud immigration tool must be run as per given instructions after which the interested end user can switch to using Business Central online.

What will you experience when you plan a Microsoft Business Central Upgrade from an older version of Dynamics NAV?

• Codeunit 1 has either been replaced or deprecated: NAV included Codeunit 1 Application Management. With Business Central, Microsoft has retired it. Instead, it has introduced new ‘system’ code units.

• V1 Extensions have been discontinued. Business Central no longer supports these for on-premise installations. Thus, any custom extension V1 must be converted to extension V2 in the older environment, before you plan a Business Central upgrade.

• MenuSuite is no longer being used for controlling to find a page or report in the search feature of the web client. Business Central does not allow that. Moreover, this is now determined by specific properties on the page and report objects. As part of the application code upgrade process, these properties must be changed on existing pages and reports used by MenuSuite to ensure they can still be searched for from the Web Client.

What About Upgrade Codeunits?

Business Central checks for the validity of all the changes you introduce to the database schema. It checks whether they are destructive or not, and if the check indicates that the change may lead to data deletion, which is a destructive change, Business Central prompts you to handle the situation using upgrade codeunits. Examples of destructive changes are dropping table columns so that the contents in it get deleted.

What about Company Names?

In case a company name includes ‘special characters’, then Business Central displays an error during the upgrade. These special characters are the ones on your keyboard on top of the numerals, which appear on screen when you use the Shift Key along with the numeral key.
